on what you think of joe biden and joe biden's performance. paul ryan was there. he made some points. you know, i mean he did the things that i think republicans wanted him to do, not back down, look like he was credible, could be the vice president of the united states. biden was this huge figure for good or bad depending on your perspective. i think he would have won the debate andrea on points, narrowly, had he just controlled a little bit more his off camera reaction. the two of you spend more time on television than i do but we all spend some amount of time on television. the camera can be on you when you're not talking. joe biden has been in politics and he knows that. to quote spinal tap turned the amplifier up to 11 when like 8 would have probably done the laughing and the kind of open disdain for paul ryan and paul ryan would be talking and you could in the split screen he would mouth that's not true. the democratic base loved it. but i thought he was a little too hot. >> stopped the hemorrhaging, fired the base. don't know what impact is on undecided voters. there were some seri

." fantastic to have you all here. thursday's debate between vice president joe biden and paul ryan was a substantive contest between two men who were well briefed and on their game. conventional wisdom was twofold. biden needed to calm democrats. he needed to set the stage for his boss to regain his footing during his second debate with mitt romney this tuesday. i think biden accomplished that mission. i think what made the difference was that biden was aggressive, uninhibited with preoccupation by preserving his own image and adept at leveraging his stature. the single best exchange biden wasted no time for calling out ryan for his apparent hypocrisy when it comes to stimulus funds. >> look at the $90 billion in stimulus. the vice president was in charge of seeing this. $90 billion in green pork to campaign contributors and special interest groups. >> i'm not allowed to show letters. go on our website. he sent me two letters saying, by the way, can you send me some stimulus money for companies here in the state of wisconsin. we sent millions of dollars. you know what -- >> you did

. this will be his 18th either presidential or vice presidential debate. he's had a lot of practice at it. paul ryan's first. but again, in that case, we think we have the facts and the issues on our side with the obama/biden team you'll get another four years like the last four years with the romney/ryan team, a real recovery with more jobs for everybody. >> now politico is reporting today that ann romney and tagg his son, one of his sons did an intervention to try to save the campaign if you will and let mitt be mitt and get the candidate to talk more about himself, talk more emotionally to give the foreign policy speech. in pushing back against some of the staff. can you help us out on that? what is the -- your perspective about it? >> i saw the story. it's a silly little story. there's no truth to it. we're focused on big things. yesterday the governor gave a speech where he talked about some of the very real foreign policy challenges facing us. he talked about building 15 ships a year so we can build up our navy. he talked about the importance of reforming our foreign assistance and linking it
spent the morning with the man who was playing the part of vice president joe biden in paul ryan's practice sessions for the vice presidential debate next week. seriously. not kidding. seriously. want to know what happened? that's next. >>> the next debate is the vice presidential debate between vice president joe biden and congressman paul ryan. it is set for next thursday. vice president biden's debate practice sessions he's got democratic congressman chris van hollen of maryland playing the role of paul ryan for the purpose of practice. in mr. ryan's debate practices the role of vice president joe biden is being played by celebrated conservative attorney and former george w. bush solicitor general ted olson. ted olson is not your average former bush administration official. he is the former bush administration official who's been leading the legal effort to overturn california's ban on gay marriage and maybe every state's ban on gay marriage. he is very, very, very, very conservative. but he is on the pro gay side of this marriage fight. today at nyu's law school i got a chanc
headlines right now, though, paul ryan campaigning in the battleground state of ohio. congressman ryan rallying voters in youngstown this morning. >> your share of the debt has gone up to $51,000 for every man, woman, and child in america. a 45% increase in the individual burden of debt to every single american. we're heading in the wrong direction. >> mitt romney is also in ohio today. we'll have a live update from the trail in just a moment. president obama, we should note, has no public events today. he is in virginia, though, but he is prepping for tuesday's debate. vice president joe biden has a pair of fundraisers in the northeast, one in connecticut, another in new york city. and also a new development concerning illinois congressman jesse jackson jr. sources now telling nbc news that the federal prosecutors along with the fbi have launched a criminal investigation into the democratic lawmaker's finances, including possible misuse of funds monitored by congress. more on all of these stories throughout the next hour. >>> first, though, right now mitt romney is heading to a rally
that the cuts in medicaid that have been proposed in the ryan plan has affected a lot of the races. because as families in america, we try to take care of our parents. that effects moms. i think that effects women really a lot. they see that and they say, i'm not for that. am i wrong on that? >> as much as we've been talking about women's issues, in a lot of the races, what these women are running on is, like you said, economic populism. it's the core of elizabeth warren's message. it's the core of the message in north dakota. so in a sense, economic populism shades over into women's issues because women end up being the person in charge of caring for ailing family members, being the person in charge of health care for their children. so they know very viscerally what it would mean to lose medicaid which is paying for the nursing home of, you know, of their ageing parents. >> it doesn't sit well. >> in my column i talked about after the debate, for all of the bad news, the one thing i notice if you counted how many times the president said education and health care, women voters are more li
for both campaigns. i think that vice president biden will do well. i think that paul ryan will do well also. but i think that the issue here is you have to remember whether for mitt romney's own gaffes or whether the media built up president obama's some figure who is going to do extremely well in this campaign and wipe the floor with mitt romney, it already set the bar so high for president obama he fell very flat. didn't come close to the bar. we have an issue paul ryan is thought to be this wonky nerd and when he comes out, if he can perform even half as well as mitt romney, they are overestimated or underestimating congressman ryan, i would say if they think he will come out and just throw out a bunch of numbers and stats and not put any hard or skin in the game so to speak. he has won a congressional district because he can relate to people. i think we are going to see some of that behavior if that debate tomorrow night. >> there were critics from the female side of the aisle that there was no conversation, no debate, between mitt romney and president obama about a woman's right t
forward this week interesting to see is whether joe biden is able to turn to paul ryan in that way and say, your math doesn't add up. give me one specific deduction. in some ways i think with joe biden and paul ryan it's going to be an even more damaging conversation if ryan has to obviscate and come up with specifics because he's the numbers guy. >> he's going to be prepared. we'll be prepared. >> he doesn't have enough time it to answer the question, but going back to the theme of the day, what matters, the economy always matters. ever since the cold war it's been about the economy with the possible exception of '04, right? we're in the war of terrorism. >> even in '04 the exit polls showed that even though it was a foreign policy election, it was still about the economy. >> it's always about the economy. foreign policy is at best second or third most important. once again this foreign policy forray into mitt romney it may be a couple days lost. he's not talking about the economy on an area where i think it's impossible to catch up to barack obama. >> i do take the point that he needs to
to get out there and say this is what paul ryan stands for. you cut a third out of medicaid, you're putting a lot of families and elderly people out on the street. that is not rhetoric. that is how bad it would be. you have to demonstrate that. you might say it's bigger than big bird. >> and let's remember that after this debate, mitt romney is still on the losing side politically of the medicare issue which the obama campaign knows and they've got a new ad about that now. let's watch that. >> victims. dependent. that's what mitt romney called 47% of americans, including people on medicare. and what about his plan for you? romney would replace guaranteed benefits with a voucher system. seniors could pay $6,000 more a year. a plan aarp says would undermine medicare. you're no victim. you earned your benefits. don't let mitt romney take them away. >> well, krystal, that's what happens with someone who says my job is not to care about those people. >> it's devastating. and as we've seen from romney's many responses, there really is no response to that video. because it's such a clea
